Ethiopian food is easy to come by in the District. But Ethiopian food served up in a three-level restaurant in Adams Morgan decked out in family-made furnishings and decor? Well, there's only one of those. Enter Meskerem. Although it's big, this restaurant remains cozy, maybe because of all the unique touches. "My grandma made those," said Malik Nafa, whose mother and uncle own the restaurant. He was referring to the traditional low tables woven out of a straw-like material called mesobs. Round and perfectly sized to hold the large combo platters Meskerem has become known for since its opening in 1985, we swear these tables make the food taste even more spectacular. Speaking of the food, err mah gerd, it's delicious. Never short on spices, the flavors here are distinct, savory and satisfying. Our favorite on the ginormous hubcap-sized platter in front of us was the protein-packed Yedor Watt. Featuring tender chicken simmered in spicy Ethiopian berbere sauce, it's served traditionally atop hardboiled eggs. Paired with an Ethiopian brew or two, this is the kind of food that makes you feel good after eating. Menu Highlights: Vegetarian Mesob (Combo Platter), $12.95 (for 1); $24.95 (for 2); $12.25 (per person for 3 or more) Meskererm Mesob (Meat Combo Platter), $13.95 (for 1); $26.95 (for 2); $13.50 (per person for 3 or more) Meskerem Tibbs, $13.50 Kitfo, $12.45 Hours: Monday - Wednesday, 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday - Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
