You are one intense dude; so intense that even your goals have goals. You are motivated beyond compare and ready to tackle the world and train yourself as hard as you can. The problem is that it is near impossible to find a facility that is more than just a glorified spa; if you wanted to kick back with a latte and a novelette you would just stay at home. You want to feel, live, breathe, and smell the sweat; Sully's just may be your ticket to an old fashioned push-you-to-your-limits workout.Sully's Boxing Gym is the real thing. Proof is in the photos of Sugar Ray Leonard on the wall, the framed photo of Marsha Valley on the admin desk, the poster of Muhammed Ali on the wall. Fans of the sport talk about Sully's in a reverent whisper; it's the oldest boxing gym in North America and it's one of the gyms that's still sending some of the best fighters into competition today. Joe Mantiega, owner and manager, will greet you in a charming Italian-American lilt. He'll pull you into the ring that he built with his own two hands and motivate you to be your best. Joe's been looking after the gym since the mid-60s, and he was tight with Sully, aka Earl Sullivan. The workouts are downright creative, and there's never a boring moment. The road to fitness is drenched in sweat and Sully's provides just that; get ready to jump stacked tires, lift Olympic weight bars, and build your sprint-power while running on the spot, attached to the ring by a giant Nike SPARQ elastic band. Sully's also offers youth programs, and girls are always welcome. If you want to feel like a boxer with the workout, the posters, the trainers, the smell, then check out Sully's Boxung Gym. Stick around for the long haul, and you just might become one. Save the lattes for after the workout; no one ever said perfection was easy. “Ah, Sully’s, my home away from home. How can I not give you 5 stars! Sully’s is an OLD SCHOOL boxing gym located on the second floor of an industrial building just west of Dupont/Dovercourt. This place has serious character. It’s sort of like stepping on set for a Rocky film shot. Walls are covered from floor to ceiling with boxing photos and posters, from our own local fighters to the likes of Ali, Tyson and Chuvalo. My coach (Emilio Correa, Cuban Olympic gold medalist) also does private sessions and is usually at the gym 7 days a week from about 11am-3pm. For the fighters, sparring takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Sully’s is registered with Boxing Ontario, so you can train here for fitness or train to compete – choice is yours.”- Kyle R.“One of the tougher gyms I boxed in. Sully's takes it to you and they take it to you hard. I realized if you want to be the best, which is what they want for you, you have to train like the best and Sullys offers that .. if you can handle it."- Shaun L.“This place is great and picture perfect; the place is often rented out by film crews to shoot movie scenes. Equipment is traditional – a ring in the middle, with heavy and double-ended bags set up at either end, free weights, medicine balls and skipping ropes aplenty. Tony Morrisson (former heavyweight champ) runs group workouts starting up around 5pm each evening. You join in whenever you arrive. Wide variety of participants here – kids, teenagers, middle-aged men and women. I get a great workout every time! Thanks again.”- Lauren Y.
