Dragon boat racing is an exhilarating international sport that uses a long, narrow boat decorated at the bow and stern with a dragon’s head and tail. Twenty paddlers per boat, (10 rows of men and women side-by-side) all stroke rhythmically to propel to the finish line. The course is 350 meters long and seconds often separate out the winner. Paddle-Up offers an individual participant entry package for $60 which includes practice and race day instruction and racing, team T-shirt and tent, opening and awards ceremonies and after-party. The festival is held on Saturday, October 6th, 2012 from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm and the Practice Day is Sunday, September 30th. Local residents and visitors, of all ages, gather at a fun venue along the scenic location of Poynter Park and in the protected waters of Bayboro Harbor in Downtown St Petersburg.
