Grandparents are great for so many reasons: presents, hard candy, potentially inappropriate comments. But, most importantly, they're also great for building and passing on legacies, like in the case of master French chef Claude Godard and his relatively new French bistro, Jeanne & Gaston, which—you guessed it—is named after his grandparents, who were restaurant owners in France. Claude learned all he knows today from watching his grandmother work a dining room and grandfather at work in his kitchen. It's only fair he pay a little homage. The menu at J&G is inspired by classic recipes of grandpa Gaston's, showcasing traditional French staples with a few modern twists that Claude has picked up along the way. Stopping in for lunch one afternoon, we were whisked away to the old country with plates of heavenly niçoise salad, pike quenelle dumplings with a creamy seafood sauce, and a seasonal fruit clafouti that was still bubbling when it came to our table. And with great French food must go great French wine, so we were pleased when we saw the extensive wine list. While the food takes you to France, the dining room itself could easily be plopped down somewhere out in the Hamptons and no one would bat an eye. For our money, lunch out on the spacious, floral patio with a nice glass of wine may just be all the vacation time we need. Menu Highlights: Pike Quenelle Dumpling, $14 Nicoise Salad, $17 Steak Frites, $19 Seasonal Fruit Clafouti, $11 Hours: Monday-Thursday, noon to 10:30 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
