John “Chappy” Chapman, who learned his way around a kitchen from his mother, always dreamed of owning and operating his own restaurant. That dream came true in 1984 when Chappy’s Seafood Restaurant opened in Long Beach, Mississippi. But when it was completely demolished by Hurricane Katrina, Chappy and his family relocated to Nashville, and in 2006 reopened as Chappy’s On Church. While many restaurants in Nashville offer Cajun-inspired dishes, no one does it quite like Chappy. What’s his secret? He maintains that he cooks with love. “Cooking with love means that we care about the food and how our customers feels about it,” he said. “When a plate comes back clean, that makes us happy. We strive to make that happen every time.” In addition to New Orleans classics, like crayfish etouffee and red beans and rice, Chappy’s also offers beef, veal, lamb and a whole lotta homemade desserts (red velvet cake, anyone?). And whether you’re coming in for lunch, dinner or Chappy’s famous weekend champagne brunch, Chappy and his crew are happy to accommodate your dietary needs or personal preferences (there are, like, 85 vegetarian options, no joke!) because that’s what cooking with love is all about. Located in Green Hills, Shalimar offers traditional Indian dishes both carnivore-friendly and vegetarian, including popular favorites like chicken tikka masala (roasted chicken in a creamy, spicy masala sauce) and shrimp jelfraze (shrimp cooked in a heady blend of Indian spices), as well as soups, appetizers and desserts. And for those new to Indian cuisine, let's just say it's more than curry, but don't take our word for it: talk to the Shalimar staff. They love guiding newbies through the menu and they’ll never once make you feel weird or embarrassed about your lack of Indian food knowledge. (Trust us, we know from experience, which is why we know Indian food is way more diverse than simple curries.)
