Scout Notes: Did you know that latte art actually serves a purpose? We always thought a design in our drink just meant our barista was in a particularly good mood that day. But due to the demanding conditions required of the espresso shot and milk, latte art actually serves as proof that your beverage was prepared perfectly. This is just one of the things we learned from our new friends at Casablanca Coffee, one of our favorite coffee shops around. In 2006, Casablanca Coffee opened for business in White House, TN. Using locally roasted coffee beans and local, loose-leaf teas, Casablanca quickly became an area favorite for their custom blended espresso drinks as well as their involvement in the community, as owner James Massie longed to create a space where people of different cultures and ideas could come together and share their stories, listen to music, or just have a great cup of coffee. In 2009, Massie decided to take his idea downtown and moved Casablanca into the Gulch. This new space allows Massie the opportunity to expand his community involvement by hosting local artists, musicians, and community speakers. In addition to serving up the best in coffee, Casablanca also offers a great breakfast (we love their omelets) and lunch menu, as well as smoothies, pastries, and beer. When possible, all ingredients are purchased locally and only environmentally safe cups and utensils are used for the packaging of food (cold cups are made of corn, to-go boxes are made of wheat grass, etc.). Also cool: Casablanca composts bulk cups and coffee grinds and gives them to local gardeners.
