The bane of every sports fan's existence is that sports aren't on ALL THE TIME. Occasionally, you have to interact with people who aren't wearing numbered jerseys, or go to places that aren't built around making it easier to cram baseball in your eyeholes. More specifically, conventional wisdom states that you can't spend all your time in a sports bar. Which is a shame, frankly, because sports bars are awesome (all the TVs!). That is, of course, unless you find just the right sports bar that only feels like a sports bar on game day. On all the other, tragically sports-less days, it should just feel like a great restaurant at which you'd be happy to be called a regular. That mythical hybrid exists in Dallas, and it's known as Christie's. “We fall victim to the Gary Coleman Effect all the time,” says owner Cheston. “We get typecast as a sports bar, but we're so much more than that.” First and foremost, Christie's is a great place to get good food. This place does a lot of things well, starting at the top of the menu with the Awesome Jalapeños. These are housemade, deep-fried jalapeños stuffed with pulled pork and covered in melted cheese. They're excellent for sharing, or to hog all to yourself when your team just lost “the big game” and you want to eat your feelings. The Christie's Signature Burger, which is as a good a representation of the art form as you'll likely to find in Uptown, is also a solid bet. And while it may surprise you to find that Christie's makes a mean plate of enchiladas, which it does, it won't come as a shock that said enchiladas pair perfectly with beer, baseball (on a freakin' HUGE TV), and the satisfaction of finding the best of both the restaurant and the sports bar worlds. Menu Highlights Awesome Jalapeños, $8.95 Christie's Signature Burger, $9.95 Enchiladas, $9.95 Hours: Daily, 11a.m. to 2a.m.
