It's easy to get lost in the crowd in this city of 8 million-plus. But, oddly enough, one of the best ways to get away from the crowds is to eat out. Yes, grabbing a table at a small restaurant can be the best ways to avoid the masses. Zoe on the Lower East Side is the answer. Housed on Eldridge Street just off Houston, Zoe is a simple-yet-impeccably designed 42-seat restaurant that pays delicious ode to New American cuisine, whilst fusing hints of Italian along the way. Chef Zoë Feigenbaum, previously the executive chef of The National and a stagier at Per Se, has put together a menu that covers the classics, like chicken liver mousse, crispy brussels sprouts and Maryland crab cakes, while also highlighting exotic plates like octopus escabeche that's boiled in red wine for a super tender bite, lamb rib served two ways (one flash-grilled and the fried), and charred pork ribs that are slow-braised and mopped in a miso, anchovies and tomato sauce. This place also does a mean brunch that runs the gamut from blueberry buttermilk pancakes to a fried chicken biscuit to Moroccan poached eggs. Yup, we'll definitely be back the next time we start feeling a little agoraphobic again. Or when we just get hungry.
