Scout Notes: Homegrown, Atlanta-bred, California-inspired: Atlanta has its very own burrito shop, and while it might be local and independent, it can definitely hold its own against the Big Guys (Chipot-who?). With nary a freezer nor microwave on site, and some of the best burrito-rollers this side of the Mississippi, Willy's has grown to be a local fave, even with the proliferation of mega-chains lining our thoroughfares. Who needs 'em? Not us, so long as this joint's in town. ATL native Willy himself moved out to California years ago and had the life-changing experience of discovering Mission District, official home of the San Francisco burrito. It was love at first bite, and Willy couldn't keep himself away from the cradle of burrito civilization—until he decided to roll it up and take it back home with him. Thus, the rice-filled, tortilla-steamed, 3-4"-diameter burrito made its way eastward into our eager hands, and is still living happily ever after in Willy's kitchens around the city. With every single order prepared fresh right in front of your very eyes, and options to tailor it as you go ("light on the sour cream, and way way heavy on the cheeeese," I might say), it's pretty much impossible to leave Willy's without a smile on your face and a belly pleasantly full of hand-rolled Southwestern goodness. That doesn't just mean burritos, either—if you're looking for something a bit lighter, the quesadillas, tacos, salads, and bread-less burrito bowls are, in my opinion, as Mission-worthy as the rolled creations. Top just about anything with a salsa from the salsa bar, or Willy's famous chili d' arbol sauce, and you're set. The only thing tricky about eating here? Being able to contain yourself while you watch that delicious burrito get stuffed with grilled steak/chipotle barbecue/cheese/frijoles/pico de gallo right in front of you. Just please, try not to leap over the glass. It's worth the wait. And taking your excitement in burrito form home with you is perfectly acceptable as this Willy's location has very limited seating.
