Scout Notes: Ever wondered what it would look like if if the owner of Fred 62's threw a Franco-Japanese tea party in the Fashion District? That is the Tiara Cafe. From the moment you step into the bright and airy space in downtown LA, you are flooded with a menagerie of sensorial experiences. From the inviting pastry case to the sounds of the custom playlist echoing off the high ceilings, and from the vintage tile from Florence beneath your feet to the colorful vinyl figurines that spill out onto the restaurant shelves, one thing is clear: owner Fred Eric thought of everything. And then there's the food. Let's get one thing clear—this scout loves her pizza. The 'pizettes' (translation: pizza for one), with their fresh flavorful ingredients and soft, springy crust, are hands down one of the best this scout has ever tried. Better than Mozza? You better believe it. Then there's the 'fresh'wiches'—a re- imagining of the sandwich with global flavor, and Fred Eric has the experience to back up the flavor, having worked in France, Japan and the Netherlands to name a few far off lands. "I wanted this place to have a art nouveau-meets-japanese- anime vibe to it," which he pulls off with all the whimsy and none of the kitsch. It makes sense that Tiara Cafe is such a successful cross-section of food and art—Fred's other digs, Fred 62 on Vermont in Los Feliz, is similarly curated. The difference is Tiara Cafe has its eye geared more toward healthy fare (less French fries and more farmer's market) that is until Sunday rolls around for 'Skillet,' a "pop-up pad fried chicken and biscuit dining adventure" with chef John Edmondson. Did we mention there's an original Camille Rose Garcia in the bathroom? Enough said. Menu Highlights: Grilled shrimp, Granny Smith apple & green papaya fresh'wich with romaine hearts & cilantro wrapped in rice paper with a Thai dipping sauce, $10.25 'Red One' Crispy Pizette, $9.50 Chick Pea Fritters with Harrissa aioli, $6 Hours: Daily, 10 am - 3 pm Dinner served, Tuesday - Sunday, 5 pm - 10 pm
