Scout Notes: There's nothing like a freshly baked pretzel on a chilly DC day, which is why Sean Haney deserves endless high-fives. Not only is he the head baker and owner of The Pretzel Bakery, located on a quiet street in Capitol Hill East, but he's also super friendly. I guess that's what happens when your job is also your hobby, which is how he got into the pretzel business in the first place. "I'd been perfecting my recipe and one day I just made a business plan for fun," he said. Turns out, that business plan was pretty legit and The Pretzel Bakery was born. Come taste Sean's hard work (for real, these boiled and baked twists of dough take four to six hours to make). And sure, these pretzels (both the salted and the everything varieties) are great on their own, but with Sean's unique dipping sauces they're even better. For me, the caramel mustard, which is simultaneously tangy and sweet, and the Nutella recipe are must-have add-ons, as is a cup of La Colombe coffee or hot chocolate, especially as it starts to get chillier. Finally, three tips: 1) it's cash only; 2) seating is limited and outdoor-only, but luckily pretzels are made for enjoying while strolling around a nice neighborhood; and 3) if you plan to pop by on a weekend, aim to show up by 4 p.m. As with everything labor intensive and made-from-scratch, sometimes supply can run low later in the day. Menu Highlights: Salted Pretzel, $2 Everything Pretzel, $2 A Dozen, $18 Caramel Mustard Dip, $1 Nutella Dip, $1 La Colombe Coffee, $2 Frank's Soda, $1 Hours: Wednesday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday - Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Monday-Tuesday
