Scout Notes: Try not to get distracted by the glory that is The Gin Joint, New Heights' downstairs sister bar/bistro. While it's always a good decision to grab a cocktail down there before (and after) your meal, make sure you make it upstairs because that's where the culinary magic really happens at this spot. "Our concept is simple," explained owners Kavita and Amarjeet "Umbi" Singh. "We keep things simple to spotlight the quality of the food and people." Sure enough, the clean lines and bright colors that make up New Heights' second-floor space make a great background for the elegant dishes churned out by the kitchen. Led by Chef Ron Tanaka (the man who made Cork so great till he took over at New Heights), the emphasis here is on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and distinct flavors. "The dishes don't have a whole laundry list of ingredients, which means every flavor counts," said Umbi. As I peered at the greatness that is the main course that goes by the name of Baby Zucchini, there was no room for error. To work, everything had to be cooked to perfection. I'd consider my fully cleaned plate a full success. I guess maybe that's why New Heights remains one of Bill Clinton's favorite DC spots.
