Stately 4-Star Mountain Lodge in the Heart of Canadian Rockies In 1915, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was called Tent City and consisted of 10 luxury tents on Lac Beauvert’s shoreline in Alberta’s newly established Jasper National Park. By 1921, the Canadian National Railways had taken over the camp, erecting log cabins in place of tents, and The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was officially born. Over the years, the four-star lodge has hosted such notables as King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Jimmy Stewart, Bing Crosby, and Marilyn Monroe. While its Stanley Thompson–designed golf course is popular in the summer, in the winter the scenery and alpine activities become the resort’s main draw. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, the lodge is only 20 minutes from ski areas amid the majestic peaks, and you can ride a toboggan, skate on Lake Mildred, or head off-property for cross-country skiing. Exposed pine beams, sloping A-frame ceilings, and a river-rock façade create a rustic feel. In the great hall, floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the spectacular forest and mountain scenery. A massive fireplace crackles next to comfortable wood rockers. While the room creates an intimate and warm feeling, the resort is located on sprawling property, with so many activities that Travel + Leisure, called it the “equivalent of an adventure theme park.” Visit the site’s activities page for a full list of things to do. There are eight seasonal restaurants onsite. Enjoy a pint of local Big Rock beer at Tent City Pub or have an intimate dinner of fresh seafood flown in from Vancouver at Oka Sushi. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s executive chef, Derek Ingraham, uses fresh, regional, organic ingredients to craft tempting breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at Cavell's Restaurant & Terrace and The Emerald Lounge. In each dining room, you’ll catch a glimpse of the near-untouched natural splendor. At night, settle into a classic 275-square-foot Fairmont room to enjoy a view of the towering pines around the resort. Jasper, Alberta: Mountain Town with Outdoor Winter Adventures Located on Alberta’s western border, the little town of Jasper is located inside Jasper National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors come to hike the mountain trails and camp in the summer and to ski and snowboard in the winter. Take the Fairmont’s shuttle to Marmot Basin, where there are 1,650 skiable acres spread over four slopes and 84 named ski trails of varying difficulty. Another way to enjoy the outdoors is to check out Maligne Canyon, where you can take guided tours past frozen waterfalls and strange ice formations.
