Scout Notes: Some call it the best view in Little Five. We call it the unofficial home base of ATL's most lovably weird 'hood. One that serves up a damn good craft brew selection, a cocktail called the Bourbon Cowboy, and an unholy creation known as the Guinness pie (and don't even try to get that recipe—only Melanie and her 12-year-old know that secret formula). Corner Tavern feels instantly familiar as soon as you walk in the door but make no mistakes: this ain't your standard neighborhood watering hole. Particularly when it comes to Chef Nate Morrill's menu. See: the Carpetbagger, a god among burgers stuffed with blue cheese, treated with a beer batter, slathered in the house-made buffalo sauce and sandwiched between two Holeman & Finch Bakery buns. It has fed many a hungry bar-goer and was even featured on CNN's Serious Eats blog... because let's be real, that thing is seriously good. Of course, for those looking for a less deep-fried option or a way to justify indulging in a few extra porters, there's the Sunshine Salad, a plate of veggie goodness (and a bit of walnut-encrusted goat cheese). For dessert? Well, the aforementioned Guinness-infused chocolate silk pie is a no-brainer... as is the salted caramel martini, which I feel requires little explanation of its deliciousness. Beyond the menu, the cocktails, and the beer, there's that one other thing that's made Corner Tavern so near and dear and damn entertaining: the people-watching. Simply saddling up at a table within eyeshot of the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Euclid and Moreland can provide hours of entertainment far superior to whatever's airing on the Learning Channel at the moment. One of our favorite neighborhood bars, in the heart of one of our favorite neighborhoods, that happens to have one of our favorite new cocktails (that Bourbon Cowboy has bourbon, root liqueur, bitters, ginger, and nutmeg).
