Scout Notes: When you run across a bar with a name derived from an album by The Smiths, you immediately know you're dealing with a very different kind of establishment. Music geeks tend to be a passionate people, regardless of their focus, and that is certainly the case with Eric Sanchez. He is the driving force behind Strangeways in East Dallas, a place literally built from the ground up. It was nothing more than four walls and a roof when Sanchez bought it in 2010. Everything that you now see in Strangeways is a product of his and his crew's hard work. The actual bar upon which your pint glass rests? They built that themselves out of bricks and mortar, literally mixing the cement by hand. But it's not just a funky cantina-style bar that they have created from all that passion and labor. They have also forged a mirror; one that reflects the predominantly-Hispanic neighborhood that surrounds them. Nowhere is that more apparent than the food. The small but considered menu is a love letter to its locale, featuring bar snacks like housemade plantain chips and Elote. The Elote in particular is a must-get. The dish consists of a cup of roasted corn, topped with Cojita cheese and chipotle mayo. It goes surprisingly well with the myriad off-beat and curious beers on tap (Dallas Magazine named them "Best Beer Selection" in Strangeway's first year of existence; when it comes to beer, Sanchez is most definitely not kidding around). For something a little more substantial, opt for the crowd favorite, the Torta. A mexican-influenced sandwich, the Torta consists of tender house-roasted pork, avocado, tomato, and refried beans, backed up by roasted onions and tart, spicy cherry peppers. Hearty and righteously tasty, it's worth the trip alone. Knowing that, the question that remains is how quickly can you get yourself to Strangeways? The only answer should be "How soon is now?".
