Scout Notes: For those who hate commitment, is there any better meal than tapas? This thought hit me while dining at Souk Restaurant, an intimate little Moroccan tapas and wine bar on H Street. I knew my weakling taste buds couldn’t handle a full meal of sneak-up-on-you-spicy Merguez lamb sausages, but a small plate? Yes, please. I alternated between bites of Merguez, then cooled down with warm slices of pitas dipped in hummos and zaalouk, a new-to-me Moroccan dish made of roasted eggplant, tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil. That’s the other cool thing about Souk: if you want to explore authentic Moroccan cuisine, this is the place and friendly owner Driss Ouadrhiri is the perfect guide. He raved about the chicken bastilla special, which mixes saffron-marinated chicken, almond paste, cinnamon and orange blossom water for a sweet and savory entrée. “In a busy night, we serve about 50 of these. It’s a big seller,” said Driss. And so Souk can have more seating to serve all those chicken bastillas, a two-story deck with retractable awning is currently in construction. This also means there'll be more room for Souk’s belly dancers, who add even more spice to any weekend evening out. #getyoursexyon #whilestuffingyourface Menu Highlights: Hummos with Harissa, $6.95 Falafel, $6.95 Merguez, $9.95 Chicken Bastilla, $15.95 Chicken with Preserved Lemons, $16.95 Apricot Lamb Tagine, $24.95 Vegetarian Platter, $15.95 Hours: Monday – Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday – Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

His menu features a parsley-flecked carrot salad, superbly grilled lamb sausages, and a saffron-tinged lamb shank, served with caramelized apricots and couscous. Beside the cast of North African fare are a few Middle Eastern staples, such as crispy rounds of falafel, rice-stuffed grape leaves, and tzatziki—ideal alongside juicy chicken kebabs.
Colors, sounds, aromas and the flavors, oh the flavors. Do more than satisfy hunger, give your taste buds (and those other senses) an experience.
