Scout Notes: Ever walked into a restaurant and felt instantly uncomfortable? The same kind of uncomfortable you felt that time you tried to sit at the "cool" kids' table in high school? For us, there's no great menu that can make up for lukewarm customer service, because as much as we love really great food, we also love when people seem genuinely excited to see us dining in their restaurant. At Smiley's Soulful Kitchen, a family owned meat-and-three on Gallatin Pike, we felt instantly at home. John Smiley (best last name ever) opened Smiley's Soulful Kitchen ("soulful" is a nod to Mr. Smiley's gospel music background) almost eight years ago, but his restaurant industry experience started long before that. When he was just 16, he interviewed for a work-study position with the executive chef of a five-star Florida restaurant. Smiley—who had no previous experience—got the job (the chef told him that he hired him because he could tell he had a good heart. Awwww). Smiley has been cultivating his culinary craft ever since but has stayed true to what he loves most—the kind of southern cookin' that's so good you'd swear your grandma made it. From fried catfish fillets (their most popular dish) and Nick's Barbeque (it's smoked here in Nashville and delivered daily) to turnip greens and hand-mashed potatoes—everything at Smiley's Soulful Kitchen is made from scratch right when you order it. For those looking to satisfy a sweet tooth, the banana pudding, which is Mr. Smiley's grandmother's recipe, is some of the best we've had. Menu Highlights: Catfish and Three, $8.99 Fried Chicken and Three, $7.99 Veggie Plate, $4.99 Hours: Monday - Tuesday, 11 am to 7 pm Wednesday - Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm

Sweet flat cornbread here is easy on the palate and left me with an euphoric aftertaste. I yearned for more. The featured meats change daily but it's also a good option to just get a plate of healthy vegetables. Ambience is simple and pleasant, basically it's about the home cooked satisfaction. A good end is the delicious banana pudding. Smiley's restaurant is a blessed asset to the community and I have gushed about Smiley's kitchen.Rachel on Nashville RestaurantsThis is my new favorite meat and three in East Nashville! I work late many nights and don't always have time to cook for my family. Thankfully Smiley's has been doing that for me...and best of all the food is delicious, the prices are VERY affordable...and the family running the place is great! Please give them your support. I'd really like to see this business stay!
