Meeting the chef can be a little intimidating. Especially if he's well over six feet tall and hosts a tattoo of a pig, outlined with a butcher map, on his arm. Yes, it's safe to say Chef Kerry Brian Tate of Slate Wine Bar + Bistro is passionate and serious about food. Luckily, his big friendly smile ended up making us feel right at ease. After all, just because you're really, really good at your craft doesn't mean you have to be stuck up about it. Which is pretty much the overall attitude at this stylishly decorated, lofted Glover Park establishment. On the one hand, the menu, with Tate's modern interpretations of classics like the New York strip and pan-seared scallops, as well as the wine list, which includes a whole host of reds, whites, rosés, sparklings and a hefty selection of rarer reserves, is all very serious. Seriously good, that is. But the attitude? This neighborhood wine bar and bistro is laid-back and welcoming, which is probably why Glover Park residents are abuzz with the news that Slate's readying to open for lunch. What better way to enjoy a locally sourced grass-fed beef burger, topped with a farm fresh egg, avocado and aioli on a brioche bun than with a glass or two of your favorite wine over friendly conversation?
