Description

Scout Notes: If you think holistic living goes hand-in-hand with hippies in Birkenstocks, obviously, you've yet to experience SiTea, a one-of-a-kind tearoom located just a block from the Takoma Park metro. "We call our customers guests because we want to create an environment that's a home away from home for them," said Dane, who's doing his part to stick it to stereotypes by working a pair of stiletto heels. He co-owns the shop with his friend Sunyatta, who's equally as fabulous in heels. "Our families actually go way back," said Dane, who comes from a line of herbalists, just like Sunyatta. In fact, all the tea is hand-blended by the duo, who've infused their family recipes into the soothing, spicy drinks. Their line of chai blends is the specialty here, and while they're all based on a recipe from Sunyatta's grandmother, the mixes range from classical to daring. (There's even one called Sweet Potato Pie.) "Everything you get is organic," said Dane, including the tea and treats, which are also vegetarian. The chili and samosas are real winners and go great with a piping hot kettle of spicy tea, complete with freshly ground nutmeg on top. And if you can't decide (after all, there are over 100 teas from which to choose), leave it to Dane, Sunyatta or one of the other friendly "tea geishas" in the shop to guide you. Menu Highlights: Tea service, $6.50 per person Samosa, $2.50 Chili, $6 for a bowl Hours: Tues. - Fri., noon to 8 p.m. Sat., 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sun., 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
