Scout Notes: For a long time, Emily Schwery, who learned her way around a kitchen from her entrepreneur parents (her mother was a baker and her father cooked pit barbeque), toyed with the idea of opening her own catering company. She felt uneasy about starting a business without an established client base, especially at a time when the economy had taken a turn for the worse. But just when Emily had almost given up on the idea completely, she learned that the owner of the Savannah Tea Room was interested in selling the business. Emily loved the idea of owning her own restaurant and thought it would also serve as a great platform for her interest in special events catering. The name of the restaurant was influenced by the original owner’s love of Savannah, Georgia and her desire to retire there. Emily and her husband, who spent their honeymoon in Savannah, took it as a sign that it was meant to be. Nestled in historic Germantown (the building dates back to the 1860’s and served as Nashville’s first convent), the Savannah Tea Company’s menu primarily consists of soups, salads, and sandwiches (we’re suckers for the half turkey sandwich, half mandarin salad), but certain menu items—like the muffins, soups, and desserts—change daily. They also offer a light or full afternoon tea service (130 teas to choose from), as well as event catering (be sure to check out Emily’s wedding cake creations in the restaurant’s front window—she’s got some serious skills). Almost as much as the food, we love the general feel of the restaurant, with its mismatched china, flatware and vintage hats (don’t worry, gentleman, they won’t make you wear one). Emily and her staff also specialize in bridal teas, bridesmaid luncheons, and baby showers and can take care of all the little details (flowers, candles, table settings, etc.) so that you can enjoy time with your loved ones.
