Scout Notes: Meet one of Atlanta's best places to fill up on spicy, flavorful Southern cuisine. And no, we're not talking about the okra and hoop skirts kind of Southern. This Lawrenceville Highway hole-in-the-wall specializes in South Indian cuisine, starring more rice, more spice, and more tropical flavors like coconut and mango. The restaurant, an export from Tamil Nadu, serves headily seasoned South Indian dishes with not a scrap of meat in the whole place -- it's all veggies (and rice) all the time, all made to order and all exhilarating adventures for your taste buds. We love us some Southern food, but this kind of Southern is a whole new bag of lentils. I enjoy Indian food, but I'm no expert by any means--I just know that I like it, a lot. So you can imagine my glee when I discovered that samosas, curries, and naan are truly just the tip of the iceberg -- and that there's a spot off of Lawrenceville Highway that goes even deeper into the cuisine. Saravana Bhavan specializes in South Indian fare, with a deliciously flavorful and extensive menu covering all the bases: crispy dosas, fluffy uttapams, savory idlis... and that's just the bread items. With a 150-item menu, it might seem a little overwhelming for a first-timer like me, but you could really just close your eyes and point. Plus, manager Raj is more than happy to guide your way through the flavors (and correct pronunciation) of his restaurant's cuisine. One thing I've come to discover about Atlanta: some of the tastiest gems are tucked away behind strip mall walls. Saravana is living proof of that. Tucked in an aging shopping center caddycorner to the North Dekalb Mall, no one on earth could possibly imagine what sort of delights lay behind that modest front door. You'll probably get an idea of it as soon as you walk inside and are A). totally tantalized by the heady, spicy scents coming from the kitchen, and B). possibly already gluing your face to the window of the open kitchen, watching the chefs work their magic inside. Keep an eye on the man working on the dosas, because you might learn a thing or two. He's been doing it for nearly thirty years, which explains why they've enjoyed cult status among Saravana's diners. Or at least that's one of the reasons. Others could include the mouthwatering pots of curry, spicy sides of sambar, roasted cottage cheese kadai paneer, theli sampler platter, sweet and rich mango lassi, or creamy caradamom payasam dessert. I could keep going, but let's be honest: it'd be rather exhausting to list out all the delicious items on that 150-item menu. Besides, all that food isn't going to order itself. Better get yourself up to Decatur and get a headstart. Menu Highlights: Dosas, $7 - $9.25 Idlis, $4 Uthappams, $6.50 - $8 Channa Masala Curry, $8.75 Mixed Vegetable Parotta, $7.25 Channa Batura, $8 Pasayam, $3.50 Hours: Monday - Friday, Lunch: 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Monday - Friday, Dinner: 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. Saturday - Sunday, 11:30 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Focusing on vegetarian cooking, this outpost of an Indian chain features dishes such as onion masala dosas, mushroom rogan josh, and paneer makhani. Lentil lovers are keen on the bisi belabath, a rice dish spiked with the legume, along with plenty of vegetables and spices. But no plate of Indian food should ever go without a bit of naan—we like the garlicky version.
