Scout Notes: Hankerings can be wonderful when they’re sufficiently satisfied. Word to the wise: the next time you’re craving crisp, flavorful falafel or a gigantic, juicy gyro, do yourself a favor and head directly to Samad Mediterranean, just inside Sandy Springs, for some of the freshest, most authentic Mediterranean fare this side of the Atlantic. Although they’ve only been in business for three months, this food has been perfected over generations. What is almost as refreshing as the food is the courteous staff who take obvious pride in their delectable handiwork. All the dishes are prepared fresh daily from Lebanese family recipes that are so beloved and well-used they aren’t even written down (though fortunately for the rest of us, there are future plans to commit them to print in the form of a cookbook). The food served here is the same delicious food the staff grew up on and continue eating, just prepared in bigger batches. With so many options, the menu is both a blessing and a curse. To help counter my ravenous indecision, Jamal let me sample each of the salads. Each one was a taste explosion. I finally settled on the ever-popular gyro wrap with two salad sides. Drizzled with tangy cucumber sauce and teeming with tomato, lettuce, onions, and feta, this gyro is the stuff food dreams are made of. It was complimented perfected by the marinated spinach and mozzarella and tomato salads. And though you’ll be stuffed, I beseech you to leave room for their homemade desserts. The rich rice pudding and reliably delightful, delicate baklava are spectacular, but the star is the basbousa, a cake-like square of syrup-soaked semolina and coconut. It’s official: I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more Samad.
