Saffron plays a big roll in Indian cooking. The spice is the foundation of a lot of classic dishes as well as a complement to a few modern recipes. And now it's the namesake for one of our new favorite dining spots in Astoria, just off Broadway. Hoping to share this spice and its ensuing dishes with the neighborhood, as well as continue to experiment with modern takes inspired by New York itself, Saiful, the younger restauranteur whose background was in civil engineering before getting into the food business, is serving up some delicious lessons to anyone who wants to be schooled in classic cooking. And that's definitely us. We stopped in and tried the tandoori chicken wings in a spiced yogurt sauce and served with homemade chutney and the Hara Maas, which is chicken simmered in a ginger, red chili and cilantro sauce. And while our bellies may have been full, we couldn't keep our eyes off of the Tandoori Jhinga (prawns marinated in lemon, ginger and garlic) and salmon Tikka at the table next to ours. The menu, along with the relaxing patio out back and friendly service, will probably have us making more frequent trips out to Astoria. Menu Highlights: Tandoori Chicken Wings, $7.95 Hara Maas, $10.95 Chicken Tikka Masala, $11.95 Tandoori Jhinga, $18.95 Hours: Daily, noon to 11 p.m.
