Whether dining next to super model Helena Christensen or sharing a steam room with Colin Farrell, we spot celebrities all the time. No big deal. Yet our curiosity was peaked when we kept hearing some pretty big names rave about a place that lays claim to the world's best smoked salmon. Since Anthony Bourdain has never led us astray before, we popped into Sable's on the Upper East Side to see for ourselves. Sable's is that classic New York "hole-in-the-wall" that has quietly been keeping the Upper East Side, nay, the whole isle of Manhattan satisfied with all things smoked fish for decades. Helmed by two alums of another gourmet grocery institution, Zabar's, Sable's smokes everything, from salmon to whitefish to tuna, and serves it up next to fresh caviar, hand-cut meats, cheeses, kippers and more. Next door to the deli counter, you can grab a table and order from a long list of freshly made hot and cold sandwiches, soups and salads. (Lobster salad sandwich? Don't mind if we do) No time to sit and eat? Then grab a couple of free samples of smoked goodness, peruse the walls covered in polaroids of Sable's devotees, and head on your way with some pre-packaged smoked salmon or a tin of exotic caviar.
