Scout Notes: Woody Siriyutwatana, a Belmont graduate who grew up in the restaurant industry, always knew he wanted to one day open his own full-service Thai restaurant. In 1994, he and his wife, Nita, opened Royal Thai in downtown Nashville, but early success and a need for more space prompted them to move to their current location on 19th Ave. N. near Baptist Hospital. If you haven’t been to Royal Thai, you’re seriously missing out on some of the best Thai food in Nashville. Our only complaint: we wish we’d found it sooner. From curries and noodle dishes to soups and salads, Royal Thai’s menu features a little bit of everything and makes for a great spot for a quick lunch (they have an express lunch menu) or casual dinner. When it comes to appetizers, the spring rolls and basil mushrooms (the mushrooms are stuffed with shrimp, minced pork and topped with a thick panang sauce) are in constant rotation for us. Served in a hollowed pineapple, the Kao Ob Sup Pa Rod—Royal Thai’s most popular dish—is as delicious as it is beautiful. Looking for a little spice? Go with the green curry.
