As northwest natives know, the volcanic Mount St. Helens is famous for spewing ash, not molten rock. But with this experience from Rare Earth Adventures, intrepid explorers will get to discover a lava tube known as the Ape Cave (named for a group of foresters, not Sasquatch). Catch a ride from Portland to this gorgeous hiking destination just south of Saint Helens, where you'll snowshoe to the lower entrance of the Ape Cave. Then you'll descend to the cave floor and walk/scramble a mile and a half to the upper entrance, where you'll snowshoe back out. An exploration of the longest lava tube in the US? Check. Gorgeous views of Mount St. Helens's lahar region (that's where you'll find "new" growth since the area was wiped out by ash and debris from the 1980 eruption)? Check. The chance to traverse the Ape Cave? Check. Just don those winter layers and you're ready for unparalleled adventure.
