Luckily, three guys from Italy are here with the express mission to bring elevated Italian street food direct to your hands. Piada, which started on the Lower East Side but has now relocated to Midtown East, specializes in the Italian sandwiches popular along the Adriatic Coast. But paninis these are not. The Piada flat bread more closely resembles a pita (root words anyone?), and is folded over delicious insides like stracchino (a spreadable soft cheese, like brie), prosciutto, or arugula among (many) others. Stop in for a traditional piada, or if you're bold and creative, create your own. They also serve delicious breakfast versions, salads, and desserts. Their space, at the plaza level on the corner of Lexington and 53rd, is bright and inviting, so if you have a couple of minutes between meetings, stop and read the paper waiting for you at their large communal table. The best part of Piada? They have their eyes set on expanding!
