Scout Notes: Since Pho 24 first opened, it's become a beacon of happiness and light in our previously under-pho'd lives, satiating our cravings at all hours. Pho for breakfast? Indeed, tripe is much more mind-stimulating than a bowl of cardboard Kashi. Pho for lunch? An improvement upon whatever's stashed in your brown paper bag, we're guessing. Pho at fo' in the morning? Well, yeah. Nothing punctuates a long evening like a few good slurps of the stuff. Indeed, the very idea of a 24-hour pho joint never ceases to fill me with wonder. All pho, all the time—breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Brunch, dunch, or lupper. Second breakfast. You get the idea. The novelty of a food item available 24 hours a day that doesn't involve a Waffle House or gas station weenies? Yup, we're still fairly giddy about that. Can't blame us, can you? For first-timers, a basic explanation of the food upon which we're bestowing so much adoration: pho is a traditional Vietnamese bowl of warmth and joy and—forgive us; we're getting off track. Pho is a delicious traditional Vietnamese dish that's basically, for lack of a more eloquent descriptor, a kind of... meat soup. Flavorful, full-bodied, and delightfully slurpable, it's easily one of my favorite dishes to be found on Buford Highway. Of course, vegetarians can have an equally enthralling experience without the tripe and tendons. It's all in the broth, and the broth at Pho 24 is robust and delicious and I could probably drink it with a straw. Toss some Vietnamese basil, bean sprouts, and a few squirts of lime in there, and you've got yourself a bowl of happiness. That slurpy dish might be this restaurant's namesake, but Pho 24's culinary prowess extends beyond the broth. Vermicelli noodle dishes (bun), rice plates (co'm), and fried rice concoctions (co'm chien) also number the menu, in case you're more in the mood for a fork or chopsticks than the special slurpin' spoon you use for pho. Thao, the manager of this new location, brought me his personal favorite menu item, hu tiu ap chao: a plate of shrimp, beef, pork and squid with wedges of flat noodles that had been lightly fried on each side to form a sort of crisp noodle-pastry. It was delicious, especially when washed down with some seriously strong Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk over ice. While I'll always be true to pho, the dozens of other options on the menu have me eager to head back and experiment. And if that has to happen at an ungodly hour of the night, Pho 24 is a-OK with that.
