Scout Notes: Homemade corn tortillas, beef tongue tacos, tres leches cake... not exactly what you'd find on a fast food restaurant's menu, right? Though the building that houses Perla was once home to a drive-through chain, there's nothing like a fresh coat of paint, a small cactus on each window sill, and a mouthwatering menu of authentic taqueria offerings to wash away any fast food memories. Seems like all of Atlanta has fallen for the taqueria's Mexican street fare, and you can't really blame us—it's not easy to find a real taqueria without having to take a little drive up Buford Highway. (Also, I can never resist a restaurant with bottles of Cholula on each and every table.) Which brings me to my Perla recommendation: get some tongue action. Hot, steamy, braised tongue, that is. The lengua taco is tender, delicious, and definitely not something you'll find at your average gringo-ized ITP Tex-Mex restaurant. Might as well go all out, right? Of course, for those who prefer to wait til the second date to make out with their food, know that the crispy, buttermilk fried chicken taco is the unofficial crowd favorite at Perla. You really can't go wrong with fried chicken at all, but put it in a soft homemade tortilla and cover it in a smoked pepper sauce, and that chicken is taken to a whole 'nother level. Two 'nothers, actually. Luckily, I can knock back quite a few of these tasty morsels, which means I don't have to choose just one. Smoky al pastor, tender, slow-cooked barbacoa, chipotle-braised chicken tinga... be still, my beating corazon! Supplement those suckers with a tamale and wash it all down with an agua fresca, and your taste buds couldn't be further away from Buckhead. Just don't forget about your second date with those lengua tacos. It'll be a steamy one. Menu Highlights: Cheese Dip, $4.99 Homemade Tamale, $3.99 Perla Nachos, $3.99 (add $1.99-$2.25 for meat) Barbacoa taco, $2.25 Blackened Salmon taco, $2.50 Buttermilk Fried Chicken taco, $2.25 Tilapia taco, $2.50 Hours: Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. – 11 a.m.
