Description

Thanks to the Patras family, Bananarama and Night Court weren't the only high points of '86—at least not in Macon, where Papouli's gave middle Georgians their first taste of gyros, souvlaki and other delicacies from the Patras family cookbook. Two decades later, the family business (and their cone of meat) made its way up to ATL's neck of the woods, where they're still slinging some of the tastiest Mediterranean grub in town. That's thanks in part to the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends who contributed their recipes to the original Papouli's back in '86. Apparently the ability to whip up dishes like tender skewered souvlaki, creamy moussaka (because everything's better with béchamel) and sweet, flaky baklava runs in the Patras' DNA. This joint is a true family affair, right down to the black-and-white family photos bedecking the walls. Yup, it's a welcome change from all those countless cookie-cutter chains nearby; like a shining, tasty beacon of fresh, flavorful fare in the midst of the 'burbs. In other words: it's probably one of the only joints on Windward Parkway where you can dunk your fries not into tiny plastic cups of Heinz 57, but bowls of creamy homemade feta dip. Major upgrade, we'd say. Menu Highlights: Gyros, $5.99 Souvlaki, $5.99 (Chicken) to $7.99 (Lamb) Spanakopita, $7.99 Pastitsio, $8.99 Baklava, $1.99 Hours: Monday - Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closed Sunday
