Scout Notes: Tucked away in the area between the West Village and Soho, there's a square, one-room restaurant named Pão! (pronounced POW) that's the kind of place you go to when you want to feel like an insider. With simple, healthful ingredients, the folks at Pão! (like Chef Jose Anguisaca, who's been with Pão! since it opened 15 years ago) cook up authentic Portuguese dishes that pair nicely with one of the many Portuguese red or white wines on display. One of the few Portuguese restaurants in the city (and the title holder of "first of its kind"), Pão! has a unique but simple concept that hooks diners in after just one visit. And with regulars greeting each other by name at the modest bar, you'll may end up longing to be a part of it. That's okay 'cause the feeling is mutual. The menu is a language lesson in Portuguese, but luckily, it also comes with handy English descriptions. We recommend Vieiras em Tomatada com Xarope de Porto (or Sea Scallops on Tomato Compote with Port Wine Syrup) or Cataplana de Marisco (Shellfish & Linguiça Steamed in a Copper Cataplana) to start before moving onto larger fare like Grilled Tiger Shrimp on Lemon Shellfish Bread Pudding or Rabbit with Hazelnuts in Red or White Sauce. For dessert, we suggest simply moving up to the tiny bar, ordering a glass or two off the impressive wine and Port list, and seeing where the night takes you. MENU HIGHLIGHTS: Squid Salad, $8.95 Linguica Asada, $8.95 Sauteed Cod, $19.95 Rabbit with Hazelnuts, $20.95 HOURS: Lunch: Mon. - Fri., noon to 2:30 p.m. Dinner: Sun. - Thurs., 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fri. - Sat., 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Brunch and Dinner: Sun., 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
