Scout Notes: There's something to be said for mixing a little bit of work with pleasure, and that seems to be exactly what the Giannakas family is doing out in Astoria with their Greek restaurant Ovelia. The family-operated restaurant is an ode to classic Greek cuisine, but also to recipes they all grew up with, meaning there are twists and personal family touches on traditional dishes. The Monastiraki Bifteki (ground lamb and beef kebabs served on pita) is named for an area under the Acropolis, where the Giannakas parents went while dating. The Greek Coffee Steak is marinated in a Greek coffee-based rub and has caused mass line-forming at events such as Choice Eats. And now there's a new cocktail menu full of in-house originals, like the Ovelia Sikatini (Metaxa brandy and Skyy vodka infused with figs and white cranberry juice) and the Karpouzo (Plomari Ouzo, Bacardi Melon, fresh watermelon juice and watermelon Schnapps). The restaurant has the feel of a Greek Taverna, infused with a sleek Manhattan night club, with long booths against the wall, a raised seating area in the back and a DJ stand up front for impromptu dance parties.
