In this city, it's somewhat of a rare feat to find a dining establishment that's been around long enough to see Bloomberg's entire reign as mayor. But we did just that when we stumbled into Opal Bar after a hard day of scouting in Midtown. The place has been serving the 'hood for the past 12 years, and we kind of know why: the place is great, with exposed brick walls, large windows that open onto the street in warm weather, and, most importantly, a full bar. But the real key? The staff is beyond stellar. If you're a regular they'll have your drink ready for you before you even belly up to the bar, and if you're not a regular they'll work extra hard to make you one. Outside of the cocktails and beer, Opal features a pretty impressive menu, and boasts a full dining room if you walk all the way through to the back. Between the chicken wings, baked mac 'n cheese, cajun jerk wraps and an all-day brunch, it's easy to find something to fill your stomach. We opted for the grilled chicken panini, which hit the spot perfectly, paired with a side of seasoned fries. After work, the place fills quickly, and on the weekends the place transforms with a clubbier vibe, complete with resident DJs.
