Right around the corner from Morehouse and Spelman, and a stone's throw from I-20, Nicky's Seafood has been slinging big plates of fried, grilled and blackened fish for nearly thirty years, ever since Nicky himself decided to set up shop at the corner of Whitehall and Northside. Spend a minute or two talking to Nicky about the restaurant he built as a 25 year-old years ago, and you'll catch the enthusiasm pretty quickly — he radiates pride and passion for his food and his community, both of which he's made his own labor of love. The seafood coming out of this kitchen is some of the freshest you can find in Atlanta—it's how he's been running his show since day one, and it's how Atlanta has fallen in love with his food, hook, line, and sinker. Make no mistake: this isn't just another fried shrimp basket shack—their wild-caught salmon, creamy clam chowder and lobster bisque, and infamous lobster roll, with chunks of tail and claw meat on a Tennessee Whiskey bun, are proof of that. (Fresh shrimp and good fish are hard to find in this city, but a decent lobster roll might just be the aquatic Holy Grail, and Nicky's version already has itself a cult following, if that tells you anything.) That's thanks in part to the Lobster Lord, the fellow who assembles those famous rolls every weekend, when Nicky has fresh Maine lobster (er, lobstah) shipped in. The Lord's latest creation? Little lobster canapés, served on fluffy bread with fresh fruit and a killer sauce reminiscent of deviled egg. It might sound like a curious combination, but take it from this Lobster Lord devotee: they're delicious. And, with this handy-dandy Scoutmob hookup, free for your tasting pleasure. And if you leave Nicky's without taking a little tour of their dessert case, you're doing it wrong. Just like everything else on the menu, the desserts here are made in-house, from scratch—none of that prepackaged funny business here.
