Description

Scout Notes: Whenever we hear our parents or grandparents talk about childhood trips to the neighborhood candy store, we can’t help but feel like we missed out on something pretty cool (these days it’s all cupcakes and frozen yogurt, it seems). So when we first heard about Music City Candy—a retro candy store located on Dickerson Pike—we were pretty excited to check it out. Phil and Carol Wharton’s dream of opening Music City Candy began ten years ago when they visited a retro candy store while vacationing in Florida. Thrilled to find so many of the candies they had enjoyed as children, the Wharton’s hoped to one day bring something similar to the Nashville area. In June 2012, their candy store dreams became a reality. Since opening, the Wharton’s have been asked on an almost daily basis why they would put something so nice in an area of town primarily dominated by liquor stores, check-cashing locations, and discount tobacco marts. While the Wharton’s long to keep the past alive by selling candies that were popular during their childhood, they also hope to have a hand in revitalizing the area and view their family-friendly store as an investment in a community that they believe is often overlooked. “We believe that good people deserve good things,” says Phil. We couldn't agree more.
