The Destination Less than an hour north of Milwaukee, Sheboygan is Wisconsin's premier surf town. That's right, surfing. Home of the Dairyland Surf Classic, the largest freshwater-surfing competition on the planet, Sheboygan draws thousands of intrepid riders to its shores each year in search of Lake Michigan's oft-overlooked breakers. But the waves aren't the only attraction here. Several excellent golf courses dot the landscape, while a number of restaurants and shops line the historic downtown, much of which was built in the mid 1800s and still stands today. A bit farther afield, miles of hiking and biking trails satisfy outdoor adventurers' inclinations. The Digs The majestic Lake View Mansion Bed & Breakfast is the grand dame of downtown Sheboygan, featuring more than 10,000 square feet of elegant architecture and panoramic views of Lake Michigan. In the Lake Erie Room, you'll enjoy a lake view from two large windows plus a double whirlpool tub. The Lake Huron Room features wicker furnishings and water views, while the yellow-and-blue décor round—and, again, splendid lake views—fill out the Lake Ontario Room. All guest rooms are appointed with a king bed, a private bathroom, complimentary Wi-Fi, and cable TV. The Diversions • The Bull at Pinehurst Farms, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course • Harbor Centre features a boardwalk lined with shops, restaurants, and live entertainment • Victorian Chocolate Shoppe offers more than 80 artisanal sweets • Black Pig serves up delicious comfort food with a twist—think barbecue Berkshire pork with pineapple flatbread • Trattoria Stefano dishes up authentic Italian cuisine made with natural, local ingredients
Elegant B&B Overlooking Lake Michigan Offers Guest Rooms with Water Views Central Wisconsin might sound like an unlikely surfing destination. But due to a 5-mile coastline jutting into Lake Michigan, the town of Sheboygan is susceptible to wind swells that can create waves up to 24 feet tall. In fact, the Dairyland Surf Classic—the largest lake-surfing competition in the world—takes place here every year. Lake View Mansion Bed & Breakfast gives guests a front-row seat to this freshwater playground, thanks to guest rooms overlooking the water. The century-old red-brick inn also features beautiful backyard gardens and a waterfront veranda. Originally built in 1912, this restored Georgian home offers five individually decorated guest rooms, each with a dazzling view of the lake. The Lake Michigan room features a hand-carved four-poster bed, a private balcony, and a fireplace. A crystal chandelier hangs over the whirlpool tub in the Lake Superior room, and you can watch waves lap the shore in the Lake Ontario room. Every morning, the inn hosts a full breakfast in the sunroom. The meal may feature anything from fresh fruit to an oatmeal bake with sausage links. The B&B’s other common areas include a library and a formal living room furnished with antique couches, fireplaces, and vintage light fixtures. Sheboygan, Wisconsin: Fishing Town on Lake Michigan with Acclaimed Arts Scene One of Wisconsin’s premier harbor towns, Sheboygan is located along Lake Michigan halfway between Green Bay and Milwaukee. During the spring and summer months, fishing boats cruise the lake in search of rainbow trout and king salmon. The lake’s breezy conditions—winds of up to 20–25 miles per hour are standard—help make Sheboygan a popular surfing destination as well. During springtime, boat tours through Broughton Sheboygan Marsh Park let visitors catch glimpses of nesting waterfowl nurturing their soon-to-hatch eggs. Not far away, Maywood Environmental Park boasts six diverse ecosystems and 135 acres of hiking and mountain-biking trails. Sheboygan is also home to a unique arts scene. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center showcases contemporary American art exhibits and sculpture gardens, though it’s probably best known for its out-of-this-world, artist-created bathrooms, which are ornamented with floor-to-ceiling murals, hand-glazed china lavatories, and other whimsical touches. You can see more than 30 mythical statues at the nearby James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden, including the 65-foot-long Fallen Log masterpiece. And no trip to Sheboygan is complete without trying a double sausage on a hard roll. The town is, after all, the "brat capital of the world.” Read the Fine Print for important info on travel dates and other restrictions.
