With one bite of their red chile tamale, the key to their longevity becomes immediately apparent. For just over a buck each, these spicy, corn husk-wrapped delights are definitely worth every penny. Of course, this isn't your great-grandfather's tamale stand. La Popular has been run by the same family for over fifty years, and they've expanded over time. Pop into the storefront and you can snag some tortillas, chips, and salsas, or pick your favorites from a phalanx of fruity empanadas and Mexican baked goods. There are breakfast burritos to cure your morning hangover hunger and even masa and all the other ingredients you'll need to try to recreate their tamale magic at home. For some entertainment with your meal, take a peek through the swinging double doors leading into the back for a glimpse at a well-oiled operation that can crank out a befuddling 225 dozen tamales per hour.
