Description

Chef Otto Herman opened the doors to his downtown café in 1904 not likely knowing the legacy that was to begin with its conception. After many successful years, the café was turned over to Herman’s stepdaughter and her husband Karl Ratzsch, who continued the family business. Staying true to the history and tradition that defined the café, Helen kept the traditional German menu that had made her stepfather famous only altering the decor and location to better fit the times. Ratzsch collected traditional European steins, porcelain, glassware, antiques and nostalgic pictures from all over the world to fill the beautiful wood-paneled dining room of the restaurant, which to this day offers the most authentic and unique experience in the city. Ratzsch’s offers a cozy atmosphere that invites guests to share in the old world’s charm and serves as the perfect place for spending time with family and friends. The menu is vast and true to its roots, featuring award winning Sauerkraut, Potato Salad, Lamb Shank and Potato Pancakes. Notable selections include the Wurst Teller (beer, chicken, apple and bratwurst red cabbage,) Bier Wurst on Sauerkraut (with raspberry and Dijon sauce,) Braised Stuffed Pork chops (with homemade applesauce) and the Duck and Goose Combination (1/4 goose breast and ¼ duck served with long grain rice and red cabbage.) Whether you’re in the mood to experience some local history or ready to indulge in perfectly executed German cuisine, Karl Ratzsch’s Restaurant will not disappoint you.
