Scout Notes: Backyard -> Catering business -> Restaurant. Seems simple enough, but it takes a little more than a pair of tongs, a snarky apron and singed eyebrows to become a tried-and-true southern barbecuer. Micah, the master-'que behind J's Southern Smokehouse, was naturally gifted with impeccable smoker skills of the highest order. He started cooking for his wife's tennis events which inevitably snowballed into requests/demands that he (pretty please) cater events. He succumbed to the pleading, and his prowess soon spread far and wide via word of mouth (by the way, that word was "yum"), until he had no choice but to open a brick and mortar locale. And upon perusing his menu, you'll notice that there aren't lists upon lists of dishes. It's like a Cliff's Note version of barbecue masterpieces—wherein you only get to deal with the best bits. Micah likes to keep things simple around here—every bit of that Southern cuisine has his stamp of approval, guaranteed to leave you with a satisfied grin. A native to the area, Micah's trying to do his part to revitalize the BBQ capital that Cummings once was. And he's doin' a mighty fine job of it. Whether it's the Ribby Sandwich (a less messy way to consume the delicacy) or the brisket (which sells out impressively fast), you're sure to find refreshing barbecue. Yes, refreshing—but it's not light, by any means. You'll be bursting at the seams. And we mean that politely. Everything at J's goes above and beyond what you'd find at some smarmy corporate 'Q joint. Because this, my fellow enthusiasts, is real barbecue. Menu Highlights: Smoked Brisket Sandwich, 6.50 Pulled Pork Plate, 9.95 BBQ Salad, 8.95 Mama's Mac-N-Cheese, 2.00 Pulled Chicken Sandwich, 5.99 Hours: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Closed Sundays
