The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra (JSO) will celebrate Cinco de Mayo and 60 years of making beautiful music with a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta concert on May 5, 2013 at 3:00pm. This exciting season finale program is full of fun and festive Mexican and Latin music complete with a five piece Mariachi Band. Alma de Colorado a Denver area Mariachi band will join the JSO on stage to perform a variety of Mexican favorites. Maestro William Morse and Walter Barr have taken several traditional Mariachi Band classics and orchestrated them for full symphony orchestra for this special concert. The members of Alma de Colorado are Carl Gonzales, Bernard Alvarado, Cristine Barbosa, Phil Marin and Beto Velez. The JSO will also perform the lively and colorful Huapango by Jose Pablo Moncayo. Known as one of Mexico’s most important composers, Moncayo’s most popular composition is Huapango which is based on the folk dance music of Mexico. In addition to arranging the pieces for Mariachi Band and symphony, Dr. Morse has also orchestrated a special composition for one of the JSO’s valued board members, Grace Fink. Grace’s father, Edmundo G. Hernandez, was an accomplished musician, composer and high school music teacher throughout his lifetime. He passed away in 1977. Two years ago, when Grace’s mother passed, the family discovered a composition written for Grace upon her birth in 1935. The original waltz was composed for piano, violin and cello. Dr. Morse has developed a full orchestration of this piece and it will be premiered at the May concert. An extra bit of Latin music flair will be added to the concert as the JSO also performs Astor Piazolla’s Suite del Angel. Piazolla was born in Argentina and was best known for transforming the tango into a new form combining tango elements with jazz stylings. Backed by full orchestra, Dr. Morse will perform on the accordion in a quartet that also includes the JSO’s Tamara Mulliken on violin, Peggy Lyon on piano and Rodney Farrar on cello.
