jcpenney History
jcpenney started out as a small frontier dry goods store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, first opened in 1902. Originally known as the Golden Rule Store (the name highlighted the business philosophy to treat customers the way the owner would want to be treated), James Cash Penney’s sold clothing, shoes, fabrics and sewing supplies to mining and farming families. By 1913, there were several stores in the West, under the name The J.C. Penney Company. JC Penney, or “Penney’s,” as it was often known, established itself as a popular department store offering quality merchandise at affordable prices, with stores on American Main Streets and in downtown centers across the country. As suburban living spread, the stores became fixtures in suburban shopping malls.
Today, jcpenney remains one of the top retailers of apparel and home furnishing in the United States, with over 1,100 brick-and-mortar stores and the online store jcp.com.
