It's a pretty sure bet you've heard of the famous Antony and Cleopatra, and even seen the Egyptian Queen's likeness walk the streets on Halloween, decked out in extravagant makeup and golden jewels. But have you ever seen the Shakespeare play that keeps these characters in the public mind across generations? Seattle Shakespeare Company presents a passionate performance of this romantic tragedy where desire and duty collide as Antony and Cleopatra's love affair shakes the foundations of the world. Mark Antony, who shares power of the Roman empire, manages to fall in love with Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. But their love faces fatal complications, including the fact that Antony ends up in a politically-inspired marriage to the sister of Caesar, with whom he shares control over Rome. Antony, unable to abide the false union with his new wife, abandons her to return to his true love, Cleopatra. This sets in motion a series of catastrophic events so powerful and moving that there's no doubt why the story continues to stand the test of time.
