Scout Notes: Legend has it that 50 years ago, two brothers from Brooklyn made their way west with one objective: to bring NYC style bagels to the left coast where no good bagels had gone before. One brother settled in SF, the other in LA, and they began selling their plain bagels for 10 cents each. Fast forward 50 years, and House of Bagels is still going strong as a city institution that brings the best freshly baked bagels in the Bay. Stop by House of Bagels to start your day off right with a toasty bagel with cream cheese, breakfast bagel with egg and cheese, or "Jen's True New York Lox Bagel" with cream cheese, tomato, capers and 4 ounces of lox (that's a lot). But remember that breakfast options are just the tip of the iceberg at ye olde House of Bagels. In addition to bagels, they bake all their own breads (including challah, rye and pumpernickel), plus pastries and cookies like hamentashen, peanut butter, and oatmeal. For lunch, they've got hefty Jewish-style sandwiches like the House of Bagels Special (hot corned beef, chopped liver, swiss, cole slaw, russian dressing on grilled rye) or turkey reuben. And trust us, these sandwiches deliver the goods. Inside tip? Ask for your bagel or sandwich served open face for your blissed-out chewing convenience.
