After an extraordinarily successful first year, the Blue Note Jazz Festival will return this June with over fifty shows throughout New York City. This is your chance to catch four of these shows and experience the best that jazz has to offer at the iconic Highline Ballroom in Chelsea! Performing at the Highline Ballroom during four separate dates in June are Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra, Susana Baca, Revive Big Band, and Bill Payne of Little Feat. Sunday, June 9 @ 8 PM - Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra - The Bjorkestra is a genre bending 18 piece jazz orchestra that reimagines the music of Bjork, one of the most influential pop artists of the past 20 years. Transcending the boundaries of popular music and modern jazz, The Bjorkestra thrills and mesmerize audiences with its engaging blend of improvisation, brilliant arrangements, and danceable grooves. Whether you are a fan of Bjork or jazz, The Bjorkestra offers something for anyone interested in listening to innovative, creative music while having fun in the process. Friday, June 14, 2013 @ 8 PM - Susana Baca - With a splendid voice and equally impressive interpretive gifts, Susana Baca is a primary exponent of the Afro-Peruvian musical tradition.Baca came to world attention in 1995, when her rendition of "Maria Lando," a heartbreaking ballad of Third World worker oppression, was included on David Byrne's The Soul of Black Peru compilation. Since the Byrne compilation, she has toured the United States several times and released several albums. At her best, Baca conveys an unforgettable, haunting melancholy, the lament of a people separated from their homeland by a continent and an ocean. Sunday, June 16, 2013 @ 8 PM - Revive Big Band - The Revive Big Band is a “jazz army” (Complex Magazine) of sorts. Packing a punch unlike any other band — big or otherwise — it unites generations of like-minded musicians in presenting a new era of music. Formed in 2010 by composer, arranger, and trumpeter Igmar Thomas, the group's musical styles, experience, and tastes range widely among the musicians, but their mission universal. “We’re carrying on within the tradition of big bands, what would be relevant today,” Thomas explains. “Modifying the message, and making it translatable and accessible to the people, so that they have something relevant to grasp on to. It represents that bridge.” Wednesday, June 19, 2013 @ 8 PM - Bill Payne of Little Feat - For the past four decades, Bill Payne has spent more time on the road, in studios, and working with rock n’ roll hall of famers than most of that rare group of musicians who can pay the bills with their talent and endurance. He’s one of rock’s most talented keyboardists, a legitimate legend among peers. A founding member of Little Feat, he’s appeared on hundreds of studio albums and toured with the likes of Jimmy Buffet, James Taylor, and the Doobie Brothers. Most people in the music industry or familiar with rock’s meaningful past know this amazing musician’s songs and recognize his chops instantly. Countless musicians have shared time with him in the studio or onstage. More would like to, because he makes most musicians better.
