Scout Notes: When Sahyun and Nara Kim were trying to settle on the perfect spot for their hip sushi restaurant, they immediately fell in love with the ultra-modern space at Glen Iris and North Avenue. After the restaurateur couple decided to bring their successful sushi restaurant from Florida to us lucky Atlantans, they wanted to ensure that Gekko managed to be both accessible while retaining a high-end atmosphere. In other words, you can still enjoy the sleek atmosphere and top-notch sushi without having to swear up your firstborn. With sultry lounge music, white leather chairs, and an airy, industrial interior, Gekko Sushi could possibly be mistaken for an ultra-hip spot in Miami. Nara says she didn't want the place to feel like a cheap dollar sushi joint, and we're pretty sure she's avoided that altogether. But Gekko also avoids that trap of the so-trendy-it's-cheesy vibe. The sushi menu is a rainbow of options, from the familiar basics all the way up to creative, colorful combinations. For those whose sushi education is still at the California roll level, there's plenty of room to better yourself. Gekko's menu options are diverse, authentic, and the result of Chef Sahyun's accumulated 20 years in restaurant kitchens, with rolls ranging from familiar to adventurous. For the sushi savants, there's broiled eel (una don) and even everyone's favorite little melt-in-your-mouth echinoderm, the sea urchinor the uni, as connoisseurs know it. And at only $10 for three sashimi pieces, it's easy to indulge. Naka has a personal predilection for sake, which is delightfully reflected in the drinks menu, with a respectable handful of options (who knew there were sparkling, blueberry-flavored versions of everyone's favorite rice beverage?) The signature cocktail, the Gekkotini, includes plum wine, orange vodka, and mango flavors. And several of the standout sushi rolls include citrus and even tropical fruit like kiwi in the ingredients. Between the mango cocktails, the rainbow of sushi rolls, and the lofty, cool space, Gekko seems like the perfect spot to camp out for the season. Menu Highlights: Uni Sashimi, $10 Kiwi Roll, $12 Sunflower Roll, $13 Sushi Sampler, $9 Sashimi Sampler, $12 Hours: Monday through Friday, 11:30-2:30 p.m. (Lunch) Monday through Thursday, 5:30-10:30 p.m. (Dinner) Friday and Saturday, 5:00-11:30 p.m. (Dinner) Sunday, 5-10 p.m.
