With the addition of Fenton Cafe in Silver Spring to the DMV's food scene, we feel a little bit better about not being able to jet-set over to France whenever a craving for crepes creeps up. Which is often. "I had the whole staff trained by a French chef," said Gointon, the friendly owner of this compact and bright neighborhood spot. Diners order at the counter, while one of the highly trained crepe-makers mans the special circular griddles behind a glass wall. When we were there, a few neighborhood kids had pulled their seats up in front of it to watch the chef work her magic, which looks a bit like a Japanese ink artist practicing calligraphy. Every move is delicate and must be just so to create the final product, which is simultaneously chewy and crispy. As far as the fillings, we admit, we got a little choice anxiety: there are 31 sweet varieties (we loved the Nutella, banana and strawberry concoction we ended up choosing) and 16 savory (the Mr. G Special is a crowd favorite, consisting of two eggs, smoked turkey, cheese and more). And that's not even counting the array of extra add-ons. (For example, do you want avocado with that? YES!) While many regulars take their orders to go (what better breakfast is there when walking to the Metro?), we very much enjoyed eating our crepe post-haste in the small, but reliable dining area. Actually, let's face it. We had no choice in the matter. That crepe was whetting our appetite before we even ordered it. Menu Highlights: Nutella, banana and strawberry crepe, $7.50 Mr. G Special, $7.35 Chestnut spread and strawberry, $7.45 Lemon (fresh) and sugar, $4.85 Roasted eggplant, $7.35 To-go prices are 50 cents extra Hours: Monday - Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
