Scout Notes: The thing about alleys is, you never quite know what you're going to find in them. While on a recent trip down the seemingly random alley just off of First Ave and the Bowery, we happily stumbled onto Extra Place, an under-the-radar Mediterranean restaurant open for dinner and brunch. A quick glance at the beautifully industrial dining space should tip you off that you're in for a unique experience, and a peek into their exposed kitchen should let you know you're really in for quite a treat. Their menu is wholly Mediterranean, with Turkish and German influences and just about everything is made in house and from scratch, from butchering their own meat to making their own pita. Try any of their Doners (similar to a street kabob, except a thousand times better and all organic) like the Berkshire Pork & Belly, Bo Bo Chicken & Hudson Valley Lola Duck (that's right, chicken and duck. Sharing a homemade pita.), or the Maine Lobster, Shrimp, & Sea Scallop for a truly otherworldly experience. Their entrees include a whole fish of the day, half of a Bo Bo Chicken or Colorado Rack of Lamb. And in case it happens to be on a weekend that you're strolling by, they serve a killer brunch with just as much attention payed to classic staples like Coffee Brioche French Toast and Carrot Cake Pancakes (!!). We're probably going to start walking down alleys more often.
