Plenty of people who visit L.A. make it a point to visit El Colmao. This Cuban restaurant is a modern legend with a history that dates back 43 years. Insiders start with Croquetas De Jamon (ham croquettes) or Mariquitas (crispy plantain chips). Of the salads, the Ensalada De Aguacate Con Cevolla (avocado with onion) comes highly recommended. Soups revolve daily, and on any day you can count on a hearty, vegetarian-based selection. The main event, of course, does not disappoint. Opt for any of several tantalizing selections ranging from Bistec De Lomo (spencer rib-eye steak), Chuleta De Puerco Ahumada (a juicy smoked pork chop),  Ropa Vieja (shredded beef) and specialties like Arroz Con Pollo (chicken with moist or dry saffron rice, finished in a Cuban creole sauce). Top it all off with two glasses of house wine (a $12 value) for any patrons 21 or over. One word of advice: take your time here. The experience is best described as slow, easy and delicioso.
