Since then her dream has been to perform with him, playing together from her own repertoire as well as creating new material with the Grammy Award winner trumpeter and composer. About Eszter Biro: Eszter is inspired by the Jewish musical tradition of the Eastern European heritage in which she grew up. She found her dream musical partner in the versatile composer, arranger, and musician Sandor Fodo. The ancient Jewish songs are sung in many different languages in her own unique interpretation, while the arrangements mix Hungarian and Balkan folk instruments with today’s technical influences. Her repertoire ranges from a Transylvanian folk song from the beginning of the 20th century to the ancient Aramaic melodies from a thousand year ago from Iraq. Eszter‘s main performances include the concerts in Zaragoza World Expo, A38 Boat, Maribor Etnika Festival, Sopot Jewish Festival, in the Palace of the Arts, Budapest and many European tours with Budapest Klezmer Band as their lead vocalist. Her theatrical success as an actress includes the female lead role of the Hungarian – Polish movie A Miracle in Cracow, Christine on the Hungarian premiere of Webber’s The Phantom of The Opera, and performances with Al Di Meola, and the world-famous Catalan street theatre La fura dels Baus. Eszter’s music displays a unique fusion of styles, where the ancient Jewish melodies in Hungarian, Yiddish, Hebrew and Judeo-Spanish take you from Hungary to the Middle East, Persian Gulf, the shores of the Indian Ocean along the desert to the Mediterranean. On the journey you can find poems of Hungarian poets set to music by Fodo and newly written songs as well. Eszter’s band includes four exceptional musicians, Sandor Fodo who plays multiple instruments and arranged the program as well as composed new songs for Eszter. Nikola Parov, who plays several instruments as clarinet, kaval, gadulka, Bulgarian bagpipe, nickelharp, had toured with Riverdance for ten years in the US and back in Budapest composed two full-evening shows for the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. Peter Papesch is one of the best bass players in Hungary as well as Mate Hamori who is Eszter’s permanent guitar player. The band’s music sometimes sophisticated and intimate, but mostly it is cheerful, passionate, virtuoso and uplifting. Scout Notes:Wine tasting has become such a popular activity these days you could almost call it a sport. Which is great, because typically all you need are tastebuds and a way to get out of town and to the wineries. Taking that last piece out of the equation is City Winery. Located on the western edge of Soho, City Winery is a fully functioning winery in the heart of Manhattan that's full of surprises. Aside from producing their own wine, 11 of which are on tap at any given time (!!), they are also a rocking' music venue with shows 7 nights a week, have private dining facilities for any kind of function you can think of, and a full kitchen serving delicious, seasonal fare. On that note: City Winery is definitely worth checking out for lunch. Soon to introduce their new fall menu, lunch in their Barrel Room is such a relaxing, casual affair you'd think you were out on the North Fork instead of on your lunch break. Enjoy dishes like their amazing BBQ Pork sandwich with house-made bbq sauce, banana fingerling potatoes and slaw, or the Wild Mushroom Flatbread with sage and goat cheese bechamel. And of course pair anything with their extensive wines, both from their own barrels (which you can see from your table. You can't get much fresher), or from their list of labels from around the world.
