The founder, Nolan Bushnell, is also founded Atari -- and found that there were very few family-friendly places for younger kids to play his games. After Atari was acquired by Warner Brothers, Bushnell focused on the restaurant chain, specializing in family fun and entertainment, with character stage shows and arcades. The company merged with competitor ShowBiz Pizza in 1980.

By 2000, there were 300 Chuck E. Cheese locations nationwide. The company continues to draw families with its famous animatronic stage shows, games, and indoor play equipment, and is especially popular for children’s birthday parties.
